India has become self-sufficient in food grains during the last thirty years because of a variety of crops grown all over the country. The government of India has designed a food security system for the country to ensure the availability of foodgrains (even in adverse weather or in other conditions too). The two important schemes launched by the government are as follows:

Antyodaya Anna Yojana(AAY): it was launched in December, 2000. Under this scheme, approximately 2 crore families have been covered for availability of foodgrains at a highly subsidised rate of Rs. 2 per kg for wheat and Rs. 3 per kg for rice.
